Mobility hire guide
How to hire a mobility scooter in Yorkshire
What to consider before booking, what information a responsible hire company should ask for and what happens on delivery.
Start with the person, not the scooter
The right scooter depends on much more than availability. A hire provider should ask who will use it, where it will be driven, how it will be transported and whether the user can transfer safely and operate the controls confidently.
User weight, mobility, balance, eyesight, cognition and experience can all affect suitability. If anything is uncertain, discuss it before booking rather than assuming that every scooter works for every user.
Think about the intended journey
- Will it mainly be used indoors, on pavements or over mixed terrain?
- Are there hills, kerbs, gravel, grass or narrow doorways?
- Does it need to fit into a particular car boot?
- How far is the expected journey and where can the battery be charged?
- Will the user need to take it into shops, hotels or visitor attractions?
Measure access and transport
Check door widths, steps, storage space and the vehicle boot before delivery. Folding and dismantling scooters still have individual components that must be lifted safely. Ask for the heaviest component weight, not just the total product weight.
What happens when it is delivered?
Yorkshire Mobility Hire arranges delivery and collection, sets up the equipment where applicable and provides a user demonstration. This should cover the controls, charging, folding or dismantling, safe speed selection and what to do if a problem occurs.
Do not rush the handover. The person using the scooter should have time to practise in a safe area and ask questions before the delivery is completed.
Before confirming the booking
- Confirm the total hire and delivery cost
- Check the dates and agreed delivery and collection windows
- Understand the identification and security-deposit requirements
- Read the hire terms
- Make sure the chosen model is suitable for the user and intended route
