Mobility hire guide

Powerchair or mobility scooter: which should you hire?

The two products solve different problems. This guide explains the questions that matter before choosing.

The key difference

A mobility scooter is generally steered using handlebars or a tiller and normally requires the user to maintain a suitable seated position, transfer on and off, and operate the controls with their hands. A powerchair is controlled with a joystick and can offer greater manoeuvrability in tighter spaces.

Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on the user, environment and journey.

A mobility scooter may suit someone who

  • Can transfer on and off safely
  • Can grip and steer the tiller
  • Has suitable upper-body control and awareness
  • Plans to use it mainly outdoors or at accessible attractions
  • Has adequate storage and charging space

A powerchair may suit someone who

  • Finds tiller steering difficult
  • Needs a tighter turning circle
  • Will use the equipment indoors as well as outdoors
  • Needs to remain seated for longer periods
  • Can safely understand and operate joystick controls

Transport can decide the answer

Check the folded dimensions and lifting weight before assuming either product will fit a car. A lightweight folding powerchair can still be too heavy for some people to lift, while a boot scooter may dismantle into several more manageable sections.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a powerchair easier to drive than a scooter?

Not necessarily. Joystick and tiller controls feel very different, and suitability varies between users. A demonstration and safe practice are important.

Can either product be used on grass?

Some models cope with firm, level grass, but performance depends on the product, ground conditions, gradient and user weight. Confirm the intended terrain before booking.
