Will a folding mobility scooter fit in my car?

Boot dimensions are only part of the answer: shape, loading height and the heaviest component all matter.

Do not rely on the words ‘boot scooter’

Cars and scooters vary enormously. A product described as compact or folding may still be too large, awkward or heavy for a particular vehicle and person.

Measure the usable boot opening

  • Width at the narrowest point
  • Height of the opening
  • Depth with the rear seats in their normal position
  • Loading lip height
  • Space taken by parcel shelves, spare wheels or other luggage

Check shape as well as dimensions

A scooter's published folded dimensions describe a rectangular envelope, but handles, wheels and hinges may affect how it enters the boot. Wheel arches and sloping rear windows also reduce usable space.

Can it be lifted safely?

Check the total weight for a folding model and the heaviest individual component for a dismantling model. The lift involves reaching into a boot, not simply raising a neat object from the floor. If the weight is marginal, do not risk injury.

Allow room for the battery and charger

Some batteries should be removed before lifting. Secure all components during travel and never allow loose equipment to move around the vehicle. Keep the charger with the scooter for longer journeys.

The safest answer is a real check

Provide the vehicle make and model when enquiring. Where practical, a demonstration with the actual vehicle gives a more reliable answer than measurements alone.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a folding scooter always lighter than a dismantling scooter?

No. A folding scooter may lift as one heavier unit, while a dismantling model separates into lighter components. Compare the relevant lifting weights.

Should the battery be removed before transport?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the particular scooter and battery. The battery may need removing for lifting or securing separately.
